Restoration plan for the Kalochori lagoon

Project Summary

The aim of the project is to plan and design the required interventions for the restoration of the Kalochori lagoon and promotion of the area, through the evaluation of wetland functions, and taking into account the environmental and socio-economic conditions of the area.

The project “Restoration – Conservation of the Kalochori Lagoon” is part of the Programme Agreement between the Organization for Regulatory Planning and Environmental Protection of Thessaloniki, the Municipality of Echedoros and the Development Company of Thessaloniki (ANETH SA). The Greek Biotope / Wetland Centre (EKBY) of The Goulandris Natural History Museum cooperated with ANETH SA as a Special Advisor. This work comes as a continuation of the previous contract “Recording of projects and studies and formulation of proposals for the restoration of natural and agricultural ecosystems in the western coastal zone of Thessaloniki”, which had been assigned to EKBY in 2001.

Project duration: 2002-2003.

The Role of EKBY

EKBY, as a Special Advisor, implemented the project in two phases. The first phase focused on the description of the study area, the identification and assessment of existing pressures, the study of hydrological parameters and soil properties, and the drafting of measures for the restoration of the lagoon. In this phase, the wetland functions and values and the environmental and the socio-economic conditions of the area were taken into consideration. In the second phase, the measures proposed in the first phase, were further specified. These were:

Measure 1: Regulation of salinity and hydroperiod
Measure 2: Reed conservation through water transport
Measure 3: Wetland deepening
Measure 4: Conversion of central inner embankment
Measure 5: Restoration of an old landfill area
Measure 6: Planting of trees
Measure 7: Construction of bird observatory
Measure 8: Design of environmental interpretation and recreational infrastructure

The problems of the Kalochori lagoon, the restoration plan and the proposed measures are described in more detail in two articles of the issue AMPHIVION.
