Actions to protect and highlight freshwater habitats in Natura 2000 sites of South Aegean islands
Project Summary
The project includes actions to protect and highlight the importance of standing freshwater habitats in 12 areas of the Natura 2000 network in the South Aegean Region, in order to ensure biodiversity conservation.
Specifically, the project is structured in two work packages: WP 1 – Scientific documentation and action planning for freshwater habitats of the Natura 2000 network of the South Aegean Region and WP 2 – Promotion and highlighting of the Natura 2000 areas of the South Aegean Region.
Project duration: 2018 – 2022.
Funding: Operational Program “South Aegean 2014 – 2020”.
The Role of EKBY
The scientific team of EKBY carried out the following activities:
- Mapping the boundaries of wetland habitat types 3140, 3150 and 3170*;
- Inventory of their structure and evaluation of their functions;
- Monitoring and evaluation of their degree of conservation;
- Analysis of pressures/threats and scientific documentation of required conservation, management and restoration actions;
- Informing the general public and special user groups;
- Production of printed material for the promotion of the project and its results;
- Presentation of the project, habitat types and Natura 2000 sites of the South Aegean on the Internet and social media.
