Hellenic Biodiversity Information System – An innovative tool for biodiversity conservation
Project Summary
The LIFE EL-BIOS project (LIFE20 GIE/GR/001317) “hELlenic BIOdiversity Information System: an innovative tool for biodiversity conservation” aims to create a web-based Information System (IS), which will collect, integrate, combine and disseminate in an easy-to-understand way, data on the biodiversity of Greece, derived from the application of traditional monitoring methods (e.g. field sampling data), but also from modern remote sensing techniques, Earth Observation, etc. The Information System will provide and further support the integration of future biodiversity monitoring data.
The LIFE EL-BIOS project is co-funded by the LIFE Programme of the European Union and is coordinated by the Green Fund.
Detailed information on the project, including the project partners can be found at the project web page: https://biodiversity-greece.gr/
The Role of EKBY
The Goulandris Natural History Museum – Greek Biotope/Wetland Centre (EKBY) is a project partner; it contributes to all stages of development of the Biodiversity Information System and is responsible for the following tasks:
identification, analysis and mapping of stakeholders, mapping of their knowledge and skills and investigation of their needs and expectations in relation to the National Biodiversity Information System, and assessment of shortcomings and challenges in the management of biodiversity information,
inventory and review of existing biodiversity information and identification of potential data providers,
definition of the thematic structure of the Information System and its thematic domains and ‘translation’ of user needs into biodiversity indicators and use cases,
collection and identification of datasets and implementation of automated or non-automated Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes for their migration into the central database of the IS,
application of innovative methods of data acquisition and information extraction in the pilot site “Kotichi Strofylia National Wetland Park”,
synthesis of information for the calculation of policy support indicators, in line with the Greek National Biodiversity Strategy, the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the Convention on Biological Diversity (Aichi Targets) and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Featured outputs
- Identification, mapping and grouping of stakeholders and target audiences
- Assessment of needs and capacities per stakeholder group
- Baseline assessment of challenges and gaps
- Review of existing biodiversity information at national, regional and local level and identification of candidate data providers
- Final definition of structure, thematic domains, use cases, traditional and EO based indicators
