It is located within the Special Area of Conservation GR4320006 of the Natura 2000 network. The project\u2019s overall objective was to conserve and restore the Aesthetic Forest of Vai by expanding the habitat type *9370 Palm groves of Phoenix whose area had shrunk since the 1950s, and by addressing the threats to the site.<\/p><p><strong>Implementation period:<\/strong> 1999 \u2013 2002.<\/p><p><strong>Funding:<\/strong> LIFE Programme, General Secretariat of Forests and Natural Environment.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-8b1840f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"8b1840f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c1d0fb3\" data-id=\"c1d0fb3\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c1a8b71 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c1a8b71\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>The Role of EKBY<\/h3><p>EKBY as project beneficiary and scientific coordinator, carried out the project in collaboration with the Directorate of Forests of Lasithi, the Holy Monastery of Toplou (partners of the project) and the Municipality of Palaikastro. In this context, EKBY prepared management guidelines for the palm forest of Vai; collaborated with the Forestry Service to implement\u00a0 management measures in the palm forest; facilitated the exchange of plots of land around the palm forest with plots in another location between owners and the Holy Monastery of Toplou to allow for forest natural regeneration; carried out the expansion of the palm forest in nearby locations, promoted measures to regulate tourism activities as well as public information actions; and finally, enhanced the participation of local authorities and other competent bodies in conservation efforts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-dbef11a
